I am pleased to announce that I have been accepted to participate in the expedition of a lifetime:
the 2015 Vermont Semester Program - a 19-week, 600-mile circumnavigation of Vermont - with Kroka Expeditions, a nonprofit organization based in Marlow, NH.
Working alongside a small group of other teens like myself, and the under the mentorship of expert guides and woodsmen, our group will travel by our own steam (backcountry ski, white water canoe, rowboat and bicycle), and will practice wilderness living skills largely forgotten by modern civilization. We will sew our own tents, make our own mukluks, weave our own pack baskets, dehydrate our own food, make a canoe (as a group project) and each make our own paddles, and learn how to use astronomy, meteorology, and navigational skills to guide our way.
The expedition will take place from mid-January to mid-June 2015, starting and ending at the Kroka base camp in Marlow, NH

By their very nature, expeditions are very expensive. A good expedition must take into consideration the distances travelled and the length of time away, safety considerations, liability insurance, food, accommodations, materials and supplies, as well as living-wage salaries for experienced and well-trained guides. Fundraising is usually necessary to help cover all of the expenses.
